Basic Overview of the “Aftermarket” Collision Parts Industry
- Hoods, Fenders, Bumpers, Fascias
- Lamps, Supports, Fillers, Fender Liners
- Radiators, Condensers, Cooling Fan Assemblies
- Wheels, etc
Industry background: The aftermarket crash industry is an approximately $2 billion dollar a year industry that represents less than 15% of the crash parts sold in the United States. The main supplier is the Original Equipment Manufacturer (around 80% of the crash market) and salvage yards (5%).
Insurance companies: Industry trade publications estimate that 87% of all automotive collision repairs is paid for by an insurance company. The insurance companies use support services, such as ADP (Automated Data Processing), Mitchell International and CCC Information Services, Inc. to access inventory and pricing information for certain aftermarket and OEM distributors. You must meet certain criteria to be a part of these “preferred vendor” programs. Such as: quality parts, warranty backing, adequate levels of inventory and a defined coverage area with delivery guarantees. Across America Collision Parts is a preferred vendor listed with these three estimating services. Certain local estimating services may not have AACP listed yet. If AACP is not listed on an estimating system in your particular area, please contact our corporate office at 1-800-601-9222 and let us know.
CAPA: A lot of the leading insurance companies require the use of “CAPA” approved parts. CAPA is an acronym for Certified Automotive Parts Association and is a non-profit, independent, third party, standard setting organization whose goal is to ensure that the market can identify high quality, fairly priced alternatives to expensive car company parts. Each certified part has a CAPA sticker attached to it. See handout for more detailed info on CAPA.
Manufacturers: The five main manufacturers (located in Taiwan) of aftermarket collision parts for sale in the United States are:
- API (rebars, header panels, steel bumpers and sheet metal product)

Aftermarket manufacturers located in United States:

Distributors: Across America Collision Parts is a distributor of quality aftermarket collision parts. The aftermarket industry has one major company, Keystone Automotive, that controls nearly 45% of the market. Other competitors: Eagle Automotive, Auto Body Panels, Certifit, and Fit Rite. Please note: There are other manufactures and distributors that utilize trading companies and brokers to get their product to the United States. Although the price can be cheaper, quality normally is not as good.
